MULALA CULTURAL TOURISM PROGRAM

Mulala is a village located on the slopes of Mount Meru. The people living in the area are from the Meru tribe, and the cultural tour allows you to experience the rural lifestyle of the women in Mama Ana's farming cooperative. The full day cultural tour includes the following items:

- A tour of Mama Anna's quaint cheese making place which provides hotels and restaurants as far as Dar es Salaam with cheese.

- An interactive coffee grinding activity.

- A garden lunch which features traditional food from the Meru tribe. Sample menu items include banana and meat stew, local spinach (mchicha), rice and beans, maize and bean stew, and many other fruit and vegetable dishes.

- A guided tour crossing coffee and banana farms to the top of Lemeka Hill for a view of the valleys beneath.

- A glimpse of daily life and information on the surrounding vegetation and crops.

Economic growth

With assistance from a Dutch development project called FAIDA (which means "profit"), many farmers in Mulala and surrounding villages have started new economic activities over the last few years. FAIDA provides farmers with technology support, like introducing biogas systems, and establishes linkages between farmers and purchasers.

The Mulala women have seen their incomes grow considerably thanks to FAIDA and the Cultural Tourism Programme. The group donates a part of its profits to the primary school in the village.
