Detailed Itinerary

  • Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, transfer through Arusha National Park to Hatari Lodge, an epic location with an impressive Hollywood pedigree. Hatari’s artistic design combines natural materials with custom-made artwork and furniture to remind visitors of the days of Hatari!, the 1962 movie filmed near the lodge. In the evening, venture down the boardwalk to the viewing platform for fireside drinks and socializing.

View resident wildlife at close range, with Tanzania’s highest peaks in the background. During your stay at Hatari, enjoy game drives through Mount Meru’s old growth forest and around the flamingo-filled Momella Lakes.

  • In the morning, have a canoe safari on Momella Lake. View flamingos and hippos at close range. Continue on a game drive through the park after the canoe safari. At 2pm, have a two-hour walk through grassland and forest to a waterfall. View wildlife such as zebra, warthog, Cape buffalo and giraffe at close range. Return to the vehicle and have a game drive on your way back to Hatari Lodge.

  • After breakfast at Hatari Lodge, drive through Maasailand and enjoy a picnic at 3,600 meters elevation before arriving at Shu’mata Camp. Situated on a hilltop beneath Kilimanjaro’s snow-capped peak, Shu’mata (meaning "Above the Clouds" in Maasai) offers breathtaking views of Maasailand below and Mount Kilimanjaro above.

Shu’mata is comprised of a handful of Hemingway-style bedroom tents surrounding a stylish, multi-level central living area. Its design is inspired by traditional Maasai artifacts, and uses traditional Maasai fabrics and materials throughout. Designed to inspire conservation, Shu’mata treads lightly on this fragile ecosystem and the lodge's management team works hand in hand with members of the Maasai tribe to support a harmonious coexistance between migrating herds and local agricultural needs. While at Shu’mata, enjoy walking safaris, Maasai cultural tours, and game drives in the Kilimanjaro/Amboseli ecosystem.

  • Spend a full day with Shu’mata Camp. Go on a full day game drive to the Amboseli ecosystem or embark on an all-day walking safari with the Maasai.

  • Take a midday bush flight from West Kilimanjaro to Serengeti National Park, flying over the Ngorongoro Highlands and arriving in Central Serengeti in the early afternoon. Famous for its year-round wildlife viewing, Central Serengeti is perhaps the best place in Africa to spot large cats.

Spend the next two days viewing wildlife around the Seronera River Valley, Retima Hippo Pool, and various rock outcrops in the area. Your base for the next two days and nights is Nyumbani, an intimate tented camp located east of Central Serengeti. The sunsets from Nyumbani are amazing, as are the food and service.

  • Spend a full day on game drives in the Central Serengeti region. Nyumbani Camp allows easy access to Namiri Plains and Seronera Valley, both excellent areas for viewing cats and kills.

  • Fly mid-morning from Central Serengeti to Ndutu or Northern Serengeti. The next two days will be spent at a mobile tented camp designed to be lightweight enough to move seasonally. Mobile camps follow the wildebeest migration, covering hundreds of kilometers as it moves seasonally around the Serengeti. In the Northern Serengeti, the migration crosses back and forth across the Mara River as the herds search for fresh grass. Witness a spectacular river crossing in the north and perhaps even a crocodile taking down an unlucky individual. In Ndutu, the herds gather in groups of several thousand as visitors eagerly await calving season, when the wildebeest give birth to up to 8,000 babies each day.

  • Spend a full day on game drives in either the Northern Serengeti or Ndutu area of Serengeti National Park.

  • Fly from the Serengeti to Zanzibar. Spend two nights in Stone Town exploring the unique culture of this World Heritage Site.

After your time in the city, head to Chumbe Island, our favorite property in all of Zanzibar. This private island is a Robinson Crusoe experience and the memories created on the island will last a lifetime. Learn all about marine life and conservation during a stay at Chumbe Island.

  • Take the morning boat from Chumbe to the mainland and transfer to Zanzibar Airport in time for your flight home.

Mapping the Migration

The Great Migration is an annual event, an endless march of life, birth and death for millions of animals. It is known as one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World. Each year, nearly two million wildebeest, zebra, and other antelope gather their young, and trek north from Tanzania's Southern Serengeti ecosystem to Kenya's Maasai Mara National Reserve. They search for greener pastures, following the rainfall. The Great Migration is a unique happening as no other migrations feature such a high number of wildlife, except perhaps butterflies and smaller birds….”
